In a recent blog post, Microsoft announced that “Windows system components” would begin respecting the default web browser setting. However, in extensive testing, no changes were found in the new Windows Insider version. Tech media stories celebrating this change seem to have been based on a misunderstanding of a vague entry in the changelog for a recent Windows 11 Insider preview build. The highlighted entry suggested that Microsoft had caved to regulatory pressure from the EU, but this does not appear to be the case. Despite the positive press, there is little evidence that the change has actually been implemented.
