The U.S. Patent Office is proposing new rules to limit who can challenge wrongly granted patents. If approved, these rules would primarily benefit patent trolls by making challenging patents more burdensome, and sometimes impossible. Organizations, such as the EFF, which has used this process to fight certain patents, could be barred from filing patent challenges altogether. Supporters of a fair patent system are encouraged to voice their opposition by filing a comment through the federal government’s public comment system. The proposed rules would essentially sabotage the inter partes review (IPR) process, one of the few ways to hold patent trolls accountable for their harmful patent claims.
