Declassified foreign relations documents from countries like the United States and China offer valuable insights into past diplomatic conversations. However, notetakers have to make judgment calls about what to include or leave out in their memos that will be reviewed and possibly revised by higher-ups. Comparing memos from both sides can provide a more balanced picture of what may have transpired, but omissions and differences do occur. The Chinese-language side of the online Marxism Archive in particular contains many PRC memoranda of conversation, including one from Mao Zedong’s 1973 meeting with Henry Kissinger that was input and proofread by someone named Sakura Ayane.
