China has achieved another wind power milestone with the successful installation of a turbine with a rotor diameter over twice the length of a football field. The 16-megawatt MySE 16-260 turbine, standing at 152 meters tall, has been hooked up to a commercial grid for the first time. It is capable of producing enough electricity to power 36,000 households for a year. The turbine has been designed to withstand extreme wind speeds and has proven its durability during the devastating typhoon Talim. China Three Gorges Corporation plans to use these turbines in future offshore wind farm projects.
