ForgeFed is a protocol designed for software forges and code collaboration tools in the software development realm. It enables interoperability between different code collaboration websites, allowing users to interact with each other despite being registered on different platforms. This means that developers can host their Git repositories anywhere they choose, even on their personal websites, yet still contribute to other projects hosted elsewhere without creating multiple accounts. This concept of federation avoids the need for centralization on profit-oriented websites or isolation on small, independent platforms. ForgeFed operates as an extension of the ActivityPub protocol, which is similar to email but utilizes JSON objects for communication. The project is actively being developed, with Vervis serving as the reference implementation and demo platform.
